A Simple and Effective Detox Strategy for the Spring Season

“Spring has sprung and the grass has riz
I wonder where the cuckoos is”.

A time for new life and abundance after a long dormant winter -(this does not really apply in Durban!) but you get the drift.
In general in winter we need to build up resistance to the cold weather by eating lots of energy rich heavy foods and not too many salads. By spring the liver is likely to be congested – it is a storage house of energy. It is also an organ of transformation, anger and heat. The Zulu name for the liver is ‘isibindi’ which also means courage or action. This problem comes when the seasons change and we have face hot weather with a ‘winterized’ liver. What has been the wisdom of the past to deal with the problem? Luckily nature provides the solution with arrival and flourishing of green herbs at spring time and early summer.

Bitter Herbs for Passover

Bitter Herbs for Passover

Many cultures and traditions around the world include the eating of green herbs around spring time. Examples are in seen Traditional Chinese Medicine and Ayurveda which promote Liver and Gall Bladder Cleansing. Christian and Jewish traditions which are rooted in the northern hemisphere observe the spring festivals of Easter and Passover respectively. Tansy plant Both of these religions have rituals of eating green herbs at spring time e.g. in UK making Tansy Cakes from Chrysanthemum vulgare to eat on Easter Sunday. From the Jewish tradition bitter herbs are eaten on Passover night. Late September and October is when we should actually should actually celebrate these ‘Spring Festivals’ in the southern hemisphere. Obviously this is not possible, but we can use our bitter and green herbs that are so abundant and tasty now.

Here is simple way freshen up for summer: every morning juice a mixture of celery, parsley, dhania (coriander leaves), rocket or red lettuce, beetroot, carrot and apple. I would suggest adding ginger root as well to add a lovely zing. The apple and carrot reduce the bitter tastes of the green leaves so initially it is good idea to favour them especially if your customers/family have very selective tastes.

We know from western herbalism that bitter herbs are good for the liver e.g. milk thistle and dandelion, and from Ayurveda: the bitter taste reduces Pitta (excess heat). Bitter is a good taste to learn to like because it is the medicinal taste, complex molecules like anti-oxidants are all intensely bitter and astringent. For the experience, chew a bit of a Procydin/Anthocydin tablet, very similar to chewing a grapeseed.

There is a more involved process which uses a green herb juicing fast, avoiding all fats/oils, then taking a mixture of extra virgin Olive oil and apple juice which cleanses the liver and gall bladder. Generally quite safe to do if you are in good health. If you are on prescription medication or have known health issues, I suggest you get evaluated by a health practitioner first.

In the mean time enjoy the green juicing and eating more delicious salads over spring and summer.

Depth Homeopathy for beginners

This is a very basic introduction (at the end of this section see the link to my website).

First what is homeopathy?
Homeopathy is a natural medical practice which prescribes medicines on the basis of the patients symptoms and experience of their dis-ease. Therefore we do not have stock solutions for: influenza, high blood pressure, depression, anxiety etc. but rather tailor a specific remedy or series of remedies, that this particular patient needs.

Depth Homeopathy literally ‘deepens’ this process to find an even more specific remedy that can heal the person from his/her very essence or core. It requires more of an investment up front in terms of effort and time, but the potential rewards in terms of improved health and peace of mind, make the process very worthwhile.

Depth homeopathy is also a bit like an ice berg. The above water parts correspond to the obvious outward signs and symptoms of the disease, but remember there is ‘hidden’ part under the water that corresponds to the patient’s deeper feelings: emotions, perceptions, sensations, that once explored, direct the homeopath to select a deeper acting/more holistic remedy for the patient.
